Classic Savory Chicken

Established in 1950 in Escolta, this Chinese restaurant started out as a panciteria. They developed new products to add on to their menu. And it was their special recipe of fried chicken that became famous to the Chinese community in the Philippines. Now, after over fifty years, the third generation of the Ting family presents a new image and renames the restaurant as Classic Savory.

Their latest branch is in Greenhills Theatre Mall where Dulcinea used to be. First Dulcinea in Robinson’s Galleria disappears now the Greenhills branch too. I wonder why? Anyway back to Savory. I remember when I was a kid eating Savory chicken was a treat because you’d have to go all the way downtown to buy it. Now I’m glad they are bringing Savory to the malls.

Savory’s fried chicken is different from the regular breaded fried chicken of Jollibee or KFC. Their chicken is marinated in a secret sauce and spices and then fried. As a result the skin is soft and juicy. I was a bit disappointed with the chicken I bought. When you take a bite with the skin on it’s good and flavorful but when you eat just the meat it’s tasteless. It’s like the marinade didn’t reach in to the meat. It was moist and juicy though. And their famous gravy tasted more like the fastfood chicken gravy. It didn’t taste like the original gravy.

Of all the restaurants in Manila and Hong Kong that I’ve taken pictures of this is the first restaurant that told me that it was forbidden to take pictures. I was glad that I was done taking pictures by the they told me about their policy.

This picture is blurry because I just took the picture from a passing waiter who had a shaky grip on the tray.

I would skip the fried rice. It wasn’t bad but any fried rice you make at home would probably taste better.

  1. I’m wondering… I heard that there’s a difference between the taste of Classic Savory and Savory the Original…which food is much better? I haven’t eaten in Savory for years! Now I’m craving for it. huhu.

  2. My officemates and I just ate at Classic Savory’s branch at Cash and Carry yesterday.. and boy, were we disappointed.Slow service, bland chicken & disappointing gravy.. It didnt have that ‘Savory’ taste we were looking for!I was informed by some of my Chinese officemates that the Savory in malls’ owners were different from those free-standing Savory’s all over the metro. No wonder they taste different!I definitely agree with mighty thor, if you want the authentic 1950’s taste of Savory, visit their Original branches instead!I’m certain I wouldn’t be coming back to those Savory based in malls again.

  3. Heads up to the posts above!! Last night my family and I ate at the Theatre Mall branch, my… ang sama ng lasa. Kung Savory-lover ka talaga, di ka talaga matutuwa sa lasa ng mga malls na Savory. At oo nga, bawal pala ang pictures don? Sinita ba naman ako ng waiter while I was taking pictures of the interiors? Bakit naman ganun, diba? I’ve never seen an establishment like that. From now on, it’s back to theOriginal Savory. Won’t sacrifice convenience over taste.* For those na nahihirapan mag hanap ng branches nila, I came across their site: http://savoryrestaurant.multiply.com andun na mga numbers and branches ng savory 🙂 Happy eating!

  6. I’ve been eating at Savory ORIGINAL ever since I could eat solid food and I love the gravy! I used to drink it 🙂 and after eating at Savory Classic (in Greenhills and other malls), I was a bit disappointed. Good thing there’s an Original Savory that opened near our place in Santolan. 🙂

  10. Savoring the Bad Experience: To those who know me, I am a creature of habit. In a restaurant, I always want to sit to the same spot where I start. My penchant for food make me explore other restaurants not just to eat but also to measure or benchmark from them. As a consultant, I take bits and pieces of good stuff from other establishments to share with my clients. One of my favorite chicken house is Savory. Apart from Max’s, I can say that Savory serves one of the best chickens in the country. Needless to say, whenever I crave for chicken, I go to Savory whether in Binondo, Ali Mall, Timog and The Link in Makati or any of their nearest branch. Around July, I went to Savory The Link branch to eat my late lunch. Food was served late, despite of the fact that there were only few customers then. When I was about to request for a glass of water, I was having a hardtime calling a service staff to attend to me. The supervisors and managers were busy talking to each other. So, I decided to get my bill and leave. But of course, I didn’t take that sitting down. I texted their customer hotline about my experience. Then I got a reply from them apologizing to me. I felt that it was my professional and moral obligation to tell them that. That is why I took time to text them. I accept their apology and hoping that they will improve the their service next time around. Last week, I went to the same branch to eat my super late lunch. The CSR staff was very eager to welcome me as I entered their store. However, when I sat down, nobody attended to me considering that there was only one table occupied by one family. I tried calling one of the staff available, unfortunately, she was so busy mopping the floor. I waited for some more minutes looking for dining staff available to take my order. When I got tired waiting, I decided to leave the store and that was the only time the staff noticed me. Immediately, I decided to text the hotline of savory and told them that I was the same guy who texted them last July airing my complaint. Since I was already dying in famished, I had to look for the closest restaurant and landed at Maan Yaan. It was a very pleasant experience because upon seating, the staff attended to me right away to take my order. I asked her which among their food is the quickest to be cooked and she recommended the Chami. In less than 3 minutes, got my order and all other orders followed in less than 5 minutes thereafter. I got a text from Savory hotline and of course, they are apologizing for my unpleasant experience in their store. I told them, how frustrated I was because I almost got the same experience with them last July and I was hoping that their service will improve somehow. But it never did. They made me savor (again) the bad experience I had with them before.
